I’m a day late posting these images. Oops.

Yeah, it’s politics. But it’s cold and rainy, and it’s what I shot today. Former Senator and Presidential candidate Fred Thompson was at the Capitol today to endorse Newt Gingrich for President. That’s not Jon Huntsman in the background, but Georgia State Senator Judson Hill.

This flag is the flag of the 11th Georgia Volunteers of the Confederate Army. It’s part of the collection of the Georgia Secretary of State and is currently displayed in the State Capitol. It was a challenge to photograph because it’s in a dimmed room with spotlights. There’s a layer of glass on the frame, all of which is behind a second layer of glass. The colors are pretty accurate. The red is really that faded.

All the shots of the hawks were taken from my front porch or one of the upstairs windows. These paired red-tails were sitting there right next to each other on the same branch when I was bringing Roxy in from her second morning walk. By the time I got her in the house, grabbed my camera, mounted the 55-300mm VR and was back outside, they had moved apart but still within the same frame. Then one left to pick up lunch.

A couple of silly pictures of my dog standing at the front door, looking at the neighbor’s Pomeranian. I shot it because it show the use of deep focus (as much as there’s any focus in these shots) as part of building a narrative. Too many people today equate “good photography” with shallow depth of field only. Shallow depth of field is a great tool to draw attention to a specific part of a photo, but it’s not the end-all, be-all of photography. These were shot on my iPhone because I was heading out the door with Roxy and it’s what I had in my hand. I didn’t think it would last long enough to grab a bigger camera, and fiddle around with the settings.
